Raicilla

Raicilla is the name for certain regional mezcales of western Jalisco. The name Raicilla means “Little Root” which was adopted by producers centuries ago to avoid paying tax on distilled mezcal.

Made from a variety of wild and cultivated plants in Jalisco, there are two distinct strains of raicilla: de la costa (coastal) and de la sierra (mountainous).

Raicilla was granted Denomination of Origen status within Mexico in 2019. Mainly consisting municipalities in Jalisco and one in Nayarit.
